The animation shows what the eclipse approximately looks like in Ilulissat. Stages and times of the eclipse are outlined below. All times are local time (WGST) for Ilulissat.

Time Phase Event Direction Altitude
4:24 am Tue, Aug 17
Penumbral Eclipse begins The Earth's penumbra start touching the Moon's face.
Moon close to horizon, so make sure you have free sight to South-southwest.
Map direction South-southwest 209°

Maximum in Ilulissat This is the moment when the eclipse reaches its greatest magnitude while the entire Moon is above the horizon in Ilulissat. The true maximum point of this eclipse cannot be seen in Ilulissat because the Moon is below the horizon at that time.
Since the Moon is near the horizon at this time, we recommend going to a high point or finding an unobstructed area with free sight to Southwest for the best view of the eclipse.
Map direction Southwest 229°
0.4°
6:02 am Tue, Aug 17 Setting Moonset Setting, but the combination of a very low moon and the total eclipse phase makes the Moon so dim before it sets, that it might disappear from view some time before it sets. Map direction Southwest 232°
-0.2°
6:13 am Tue, Aug 17 Not directly visible Maximum Eclipse Below horizon Map direction Southwest 234°
-0.8°
8:03 am Tue, Aug 17 Not directly visible Penumbral Eclipse ends Below horizon Map direction West 259°
-9.8°

The curvature of the shadow's path and the apparent rotation of the Moon's disk is due to the Earth's rotation.

During this penumbral lunar eclipse, the Earth's main shadow does not cover the Moon. As the Earth's shadow (umbra) misses the Moon during a penumbral lunar eclipse, there are no other locations on Earth where the Moon appears partially or totally eclipsed during this event. A penumbral lunar eclipse can be a bit hard to see as the shadowed part is only a little bit fainter than the rest of the Moon.
