The animation shows what the eclipse approximately looks like in Redding. Stages and times of the eclipse are outlined below. All times are local time (PDT) for Redding.

Time Phase Event Direction Altitude
10:24 pm Mon, Aug 16
Penumbral Eclipse begins The Earth's penumbra start touching the Moon's face. Map direction Southeast 135°
23.7°
12:13 am Tue, Aug 17
Maximum Eclipse Moon is closest to the center of the shadow. Map direction South-southeast 162°
34.6°
2:03 am Tue, Aug 17
Penumbral Eclipse ends The Earth's penumbra ends. Map direction South-southwest 194°
35.5°

The curvature of the shadow's path and the apparent rotation of the Moon's disk is due to the Earth's rotation.

During this penumbral lunar eclipse, the Earth's main shadow does not cover the Moon. As the Earth's shadow (umbra) misses the Moon during a penumbral lunar eclipse, there are no other locations on Earth where the Moon appears partially or totally eclipsed during this event. A penumbral lunar eclipse can be a bit hard to see as the shadowed part is only a little bit fainter than the rest of the Moon.
