Super New Moon and a Micro Full Moon

We get another Super New Moon in June. The Sun, Moon, and Earth will line up on June 15, with the New Moon only 357,218 km (221,965 miles) from our home planet.

VIDEO: Why can’t we see the New Moon?

Two weeks later, the Full Moon on June 29 will be near its farthest point from Earth: 405,254 km (251,813 miles) to be exact, making it a Micro Full Moon.

Supermoons happen when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth.

A Micromoon can appear smaller and dimmer than an average Full Moon. But we won’t notice much of a difference, as it is only about 6–7% smaller. In fact, if you are looking at the Full Moon near the horizon, it will look bigger than a Full Moon high up in the dark sky. This is due to an optical mind-trick known as the Moon illusion.

The Moon & Planets in June

Every month, the Moon completes one circuit around the sky, passing through the same 12 or so constellations that the Sun does over the course of a year.

Along the way, the Moon sweeps by each of the planets. This month’s notable close approaches are as follows:

  • June 10, Moon-Saturn: The Waning Crescent Moon meets up with Saturn. See what it looks like from New York just before sunrise.
  • June 12 or 13, Moon-Mars: The Waning Crescent Moon rises with Mars just before sunrise. See it on our Night Sky Map for Sydney and look out for Saturn too.
  • June 16 or 17, Moon-Mercury-Jupiter-Venus: A sliver of a Waxing Crescent Moon hangs out with Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus. The stars Pollux and Castor are also close by. How many can you spot? See the view from New York just after sunset on June 16. Sydney is better on June 17.

The above close approaches are visible from more or less any part of the world—we’ve included the examples from our Night Sky Map to give you a taste of the view from different cities.

Where Is the Moon in the Zodiac in June?

At Full Moon in June 2026, the Moon will be in the constellation Sagittarius.

Each month, as it completes one orbit around the Earth, the Moon appears to travel through constellations within the zodiac, which astronomers define as a strip of sky either side of the ecliptic.

These include the 12 “traditional” constellations of the zodiac—such as Aries and Libra—plus the lesser-known constellation Ophiuchus. And because the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about 5° to the ecliptic, it occasionally wanders into other constellations, too, such as Auriga.

The Full Moon in June Is the Strawberry Moon

The Full Moon in June is known as the Strawberry Moon, named after wild strawberries that start to ripen in the Northern Hemisphere this time of year. It is the last of three colorfully named Full Moons since the Blood Moon in March.

June’s Full Moon is also known as the Rose Moon, Hot Moon and the Mead Moon. Other names include Berries Ripen Moon, and Green Corn Moon.
